Antibacterial spray or biological odor removal – what's the difference?

One works against bacteria. The other works with bacteria.

Antibacterial spray, or bactericidal as many say, and biological odor removal can be used for the same problem: bad odors in clothes and textiles. But they are based on two completely different principles.

An antibacterial (bactericidal) spray for clothes is designed specifically to kill or inhibit bacteria. The principle is simple: since certain bacteria contribute to bad odor, the aim is to reduce the amount of bacteria. The effect can be fast. But a textile used close to the body does not remain bacteria-free. As soon as you put the garment on again, it comes into contact with skin, sweat, skin oils and microorganisms from both the body and our environment.

Therefore, killing or inhibiting bacteria at one point does not automatically mean that the odor is gone forever. When the odor returns, the treatment must be repeated.

There is also research that raises the question of what happens when we try to eliminate bacteria on a surface. Microbiologist Chris Callewaert, in studies of the armpit's bacterial flora, also known as the microbiome, has shown that products that affect the bacterial flora can alter the balance between different bacteria and, in some cases, favor bacterial groups associated with bad odor. That is, amplify the bad odor.

The research concerns the skin's microbiome, not antibacterial sprays for textiles. But it points to something interesting: killing bacteria does not always mean that the microbial environment changes in the direction we want.

Biological odor removal – works with bacteria

Biological odor removal is based on a completely different principle.

Instead of trying to make the textile bacteria-free, selected microorganisms and their natural biological processes are used.
