Enkla skillnader du kan göra vid akut vattenbrist

Simple changes you can make during an acute water shortage

Water is a given for most of us in Sweden. But during periods of drought or when the drinking water system is under severe pressure, there can quickly be a shortage of clean water – even here at home. Stockholmers and other affected parts of the country are currently being urged to save tap water, and there are several simple ways to make a difference in everyday life.

Every drop counts

An average Swede uses about 140 liters of water per day. A large part goes to hygiene and laundry – and that's where we can have the biggest impact. Skipping a single machine wash can save between 50 and 70 liters of water.

Five simple ways to save water at home

  1. Skip unnecessary washes. Many garments are not dirty after one use; they are just a little stale. A washing machine consumes about 50 liters of water per wash, so instead of throwing them in the machine, you can air them out or freshen them up in other ways. This way, you save water and make your clothes last longer.

  2. Turn off the tap. When you brush your teeth, lather your hands, or shave – turn off the water until you need it again. This can save several liters every time.

  3. Shorten your showers. A 10-minute shower uses approximately 120 liters of water. By halving the time, you also halve the consumption.

  4. Wash dishes smartly. Use a dishwasher if you have one – it often uses less water than washing by hand under running water.

  5. Collect rainwater in the garden. Do you have a garden? Place out barrels or buckets and use rainwater for irrigation instead of tap water.

Small habits, big impact

It may feel like an individual's effort doesn't matter. But if every household in Sweden skips just one wash a week, it can save millions of liters of water in a short time. In addition, clothes last longer, and we reduce emissions from detergents and energy.

📌 Tip!
For those who want to reduce washing, there are textile sprays that freshen up clothes without them needing to be machine-washed as often. One such product is Pure Effect Textile Spray, which uses biotechnology and beneficial bacteria to combat odor-producing elements. This way, you can save water, energy – and your clothes.
